Kraft vs. Coated Paperboard: Choosing Sustainable Custom Packaging

"Eco-friendly" gets used loosely in packaging marketing, which makes it hard to know what you're actually choosing between. Here's a more grounded comparison of the two materials brands usually mean when they say they want "sustainable" packaging.

Kraft paperboard

Kraft is uncoated, unbleached paper stock with a natural brown (or lightly bleached, near-white) finish. Because it's uncoated, it's generally simpler to recycle than laminated or heavily coated board, and the natural, visibly-recycled-looking finish has become a visual shorthand for "sustainable" in retail — which is part of why it's so popular with eco-conscious and artisan brands, independent of its actual recyclability.

The tradeoff: uncoated stock doesn't hold fine full-color print or high-gloss finishes as well as coated board. Kraft pairs best with one- or two-color printing, debossing, and finishes that don't require a smooth, coated surface.

Coated paperboard (SBS / folding carton stock)

Coated board has a smooth clay or polymer coating that makes it ideal for vibrant full-color print, gloss and matte laminates, and fine print detail. It's the standard choice when print quality and color accuracy matter more than the raw, natural look. The coating itself is what makes recycling more involved than plain kraft — some coatings recycle easily through standard paper-recycling streams, others (especially plastic-laminated coatings) don't.

How to choose without greenwashing yourself

Be specific rather than reaching for "eco-friendly" as a blanket label. A few honest questions to ask before you order:

• Does this board need a plastic lamination, or would a water-based or uncoated finish work just as well?
• Is the "sustainable look" (kraft, natural texture) actually what matters to your customer, or is it the material's real recyclability?
• Would a smaller box or thinner board reduce material use more than switching stock entirely?

Sustainability in packaging is usually a combination of material choice, coating choice and right-sizing the box — not a single "green" material that solves it on its own.
